The Organic Cyclist

from seed to saddle

What I plan to do

In September of 2010 I am embarking on a cycling journey to promote sustainable, organic farming. I plan to ride my bicycle from an organic farm in Imperial Beach ending my journey at an Organic farm just north of San Francisco, Ca. I intend to visit, stay and participate in the daily farming operations of many of the organic farms along the the way. I hope to study, observe and learn sustainable farming techniques during these visits. I expect to visit between 10-15 farms and anticipate that the trip will take me between 30 – 45 days and cover approximately 700 miles by bike and 100 miles by foot.

My ultimate goal is to educate people about the importance of supporting organic farming and organic products. I will start with a presentation to my local triathlon club and discuss the benefits of living an organic lifestyle. A panel of speakers from various backgrounds in oceanography, agriculture, and the organic food industry will add validity and expert information. After completing my trip I’ll conduct a follow up panel discussion to share insights and tales from my trip and discuss thoughts on future organic events. I will also educate through social media, including regular blogs and updates before, during and after my trip.

  2. Hey you, I don’t know if you had a send off or not, but it looks like you’re on your way. I’m no stranger to the sickle or it’s big and significantly more dangerous sister the sythe. We have 2 arces that I’ve mowed too many times to count. I’ve just come back from Provence France, and it was just absolutely brilliant. I’ll send a link to some photos soon. I also got to ride Mont Ventoux and Alple d’Heuz. Both were incredible.

Good luck, have fun and you can look after my garden when you get back.

    • Sparky! Wow! That sounds great. I would love to go back and ride the tour again! Was Alpe d’Heuz hot at the top or is that Ventoux? Which one is the one where the guy died at the top during the tour? Well, I am sure you had a smashing good time! In 2003 I climbed the Col du Tourmalet and the Col d’Aspin. One of the best experiences of my life! I can’t wait to see pics.

I will certainly help look after your garden….we can build a permaculture where there is no tilling and no mowing! I will teach you. Everything works off of one another. I do not leave until Sept 1st. My send off will take place at Whole Foods in La Jolla between 8-9. So you can come get some coffee and either roll out with me or be on your way to work..which ever you prefer. haha! I should see you at Don’s this weekend!

  3. Buon viaggio! I might have to come take some pictures of you along the way…

  4. Ican not wait for the updates!
